There are different types of mints , all of which belong to the family Labiatae mint is the worlds most important flavor peppermint being the most dominant Peppermint ( Mentha x piperita) a sterile hybrid derived from a cross between Mentha aquatic and Mentha spicata. Its leaves have sweetish aroma , pungent taste and cool after – taste Its oil has strong odour of menthol. Thus, peppermint is due to its essential oil. Essential oil. Essential oil are mostly volatile odorous oils , that occur in certain plants and in specified parts. M. piperita oil obtained from aerial biomass is extensively used in pharmaceuticals, confectionery, flavor and fragrance industries. The oil has a sweet aroma because of Its low menthol content and presence of some minor constituents hence large quantity is used as flavor in toothpaste, chewing gum, confectionery, cigarette and tobacco. Some dehydrated leaves are used in infusions for treatment of digestive problems.
