Essential oil are mostly volatile odorous oils , that occur in certain plants and in specified parts. M. piperita oil obtained from aerial biomass is extensively used in pharmaceuticals, confectionery, flavor and fragrance industries. The oil has a sweet aroma because of Its low menthol content and presence of some minor constituents hence large quantity is used as flavor in toothpaste, chewing gum, confectionery, cigarette and tobacco. Some dehydrated leaves are used in infusions for treatment of digestive problems. The oil possesses carminative, stomachic, mild antispasmodic, expectorant, antiseptic and local anesthetic properties.
