Distillation of Rose Oil:
After harvesting, roses are immediately taken to the distillation plant. To prevent loss of oil in case of delay, flowers can be: Spread at low temperatures and sprayed with water, or Immersed in water tanks, which can later be used in distillation. In India, three primary distillation methods are used:

Deg and Bhapka Method (Hydro-Distillation)

Traditional equipment made of copper includes a round kettle (deg) and a receiver (bhapka), connected via bamboo (chonga). The receiver is placed in a small water tank to condense the vapor. Capacity: 50–100 kg flowers per batch; Duration: 6–8 hours Oil recovery: 0.01–0.015%

Direct Fired Distillation Unit (Hydro-Steam Distillation)

  • Consists of a kettle (still), column, condenser, and receiver, made of copper or stainless steel.
  • Capacity: 100–200 kg flowers per batch; Duration: 4–6 hours Includes "cohobation" to recycle condensate and improve oil recovery.
  • Cost: ₹2.5–3.0 lakhs (if stainless steel)

Boiler Operated Unit (Steam Distillation)

  • Modern and suitable for large-scale production
  • Includes distillation unit and cohobation unit for complete oil recovery
  • Duration: 4–5 hours
  • Oil recovery: 0.025–0.03%
  • Cost: ₹7–9 lakhs depending on boiler capacity
  • Advantage: Multiple distillation units can operate simultaneously for efficiency
